Spike Island were in need of a new website design & development partner. Coming off the back of a digital strategy piece of work the team had big plans and visions for their new website and wanted a partner who could help to deliver this. Atomic Smash worked with Spike Island to identify where the website could help to streamline processes as well as being a beautiful online platform rich with information and resources. Our solution is a bespoke WordPress & WooCommerce platform that allows Spike Island a new level of functionality and flexibility that will bring a new dimension to Spike Island’s digital strategy.
Atomic Smash worked very closely with the marketing team at Spike Island to facilitate a deep dive into how the new website would best benefit the organisation and its users. The programme of work involved:
After drawing up a thorough set of requirements and checking these off against Spike Island’s aims and objectives for the project we were able to work closely with the team to create a functioning prototype of the new website.
This was in the form of a Wireframe and allowed us to test the function of the new website with users and people from the visitor panel. This stage in the process is incredibly valuable and allowed us to gather valuable insights around how users wanted to navigate through the website, what was important to them and allowed ask questions around what would users expect to find within certain sections.
This prototype was developed to be tested on desktop and mobile.
After being provided the new brand guidelines by Kellenberger-White we set to work to draw up a comprehensive online style guide that covered the vast range of custom blocks design and developed for Spike Island’s new WordPress website.
Our design approach goes beyond designing just single templates, but incorporates an entire library of re-usable blocks and modules that can work across numerous pages. This modular approach allows for sites to grow over time by adding and removing blocks as they are required.
The new visual identity provided by the branding agency allowed us to explore some more playful approaches to sections, such as the scrolling “See more” button that sits at the bottom of the exhibitions and events.
We wanted to ensure that the design was mobile first in its approach and also scored highly on accessibility by utilising high contrast colours and a clear legible font.
The platform developed for Spike Island is a bespoke WordPress & WooCommerce website developed from the ground up exactly as per their requirements. After uncovering a number of post types and templates all of this was built into the information architecture of the website.
Our approach when developing large enterprise ready websites is to focus on site speed, a minimal number of 3rd party plug-ins and a focus on accessibility.
The site allows for as much customisation as possible without making it too onerous to keep updated or to add new content. Working with WordPress and WooCommerce allowed for total customisation of all the required areas and allowed us to streamline internal processes for the team around events, ticketing and shop sales.
Atomic Smash and Spike Island have an on-going relationship where we will meet up every quarter to review the websites performance against a number of KPIs and examine analytics to understand where the website can be improved.
This on-going relationship will allow for the website to continually evolve and grow as the organisation moves further into the digital world and wants to take more advantage of things such as marketing automation, process refinement and data management.
